Movement Therapy

coolness.jpgMovement Therapy is a field of healing that works from the understanding that the body and the mind are intimately connected, and that we express our inner selves (whether consciously or unconsciously) through our body movement.

This category is distinct in that so many different forms of movement can be included here. Advanced Yoga and Pilates teachers often consider themselves to be movement therapists. So do Nia instructors. So do many dance instructors.

The key is that movement therapy is not a purely physical endeavor. It has the capacity to tap into the body of knowledge that bridges the fields of movement and psychotherapy. Movement therapy exists in many different forms, from dance to body-based psychological treatment. All of the forms of movement therapy have something different to offer and whether you are practicing yoga or free-form dance, you are sure to gain a deeper connection to your body and a better understanding of its connection to the rest of your life.

wellpdx requires that our movement practitioners hold at least one certification in their respective fields, if there is a certification process. For dance instructors, often there is no overseeing body, in which case their inclusion is based solely on reference checks and office/studio visits.
