Acupuncture is part of an ancient healing system used to promote wellness and balance in the whole person. Acupuncture utilizes tiny, single use, sterile needles that when placed at the appropriate points on the body are able to alleviate pain and illness. Though acupuncturists are best known for practicing acupuncture, an office visit may also include herbal medicine, nutritional recommendations, moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, shiatsu, tuina, and energy work such as qi gong or tai ji. The state of Oregon recognizes this type of practitioner as a Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc) while Washington uses the title East Asian Medicine Practitioner (EAMP). Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and is one of the safest and most researched forms of complimentary and alternative medicine.
